GCSE and A-Level Results 2022

For the first time since 2019, GCSE and A-Level students sat their exams in 2022. However, due to the disruption to education caused by the pandemic, advance information was given to students giving them a heads-up as to what topics will and won’t come up in the exams. Despite this, exam results across the board fell when compared to 2021. This is probably due to grade boundaries increasing, which in effect negated the “advantage” of giving advance information. For example, without advance information the pass mark for AQA GCSE mathematics was 122 in 2019 but this year with advance information the pass mark was 135. So I do question what the point of all of it was, but anyway… I digress.

723,450 students were entered for GCSE mathematics and 95,635 for A-Level mathematics in 2022.

I was very pleased with our results this year. As I expected, the results were down compared to 2021 as the results were very inflated during the pandemic. We also had fewer students in 2021 due to the pandemic so the sample size was smaller and therefore less reliable than this year.

79% of our students passed their exams, which compares favourably to the UK average of 65%. This means that if you get tutoring with Metatutor, you are 14% more likely to pass your exams! 83% of our higher tier GCSE students achieved a level 6 grade or above, which is great and an improvement on both 2020 and 2019. We also achieved our first Level 9 GCSE grade, again very pleasing (especially for the student involved!).

The average grade achieved by our GCSE students was 4.86, which is down on last year’s inflated number (5.27), but still way up on the UK average grade (4.44).

Our A-Level results were down compared to last year (unsurprisingly given all of our students last year achieved an A or A*) but still were very pleasing and up on pre-pandemic grades.

The below table shows the percentage of our GCSE students that achieved each grade or above, for our students and the UK as a whole. This year’s data is also compared to 2019 as this was the last time actual exams were sat like in 2022. To view our results during the pandemic, you can read our 2021 blog and our 2020 blog. All the UK data used can be found here.
